No, certainly not the first time for surgery for this 3 year old veteran of Children's Mercy. But the first time for OUTPATIENT surgery. Although I feel "surgery" isn't even really the appropriate term for slipping a new set of ear tubes in. But we'll take an uneventful trip to the OR anytime with our Violet girl! As always, she was the model patient, happy as ever.
This time they brought her 'big girl' toys to play with during our wait, like My Little Ponies. Thankfully we only sat in that little room for just over an hour, rather than the 5 hours as we did before her open heart surgery.
After handing her off with the OR nurse, we went to waiting room and barely had a chance to sit down when they were already calling our names saying she was done! Definitely unlike any other time in this waiting room! Of course, the last time she had tubes put in, it was a marathon surgery with 2 different surgeons performing 7 different procedures (including her first palate repair). In fact, I had asked her ENT if there was anything else we might need to have done during this OR time -- it seemed like a waste to go to surgery for ONLY ear tubes. But, since we're still waiting to see what is going to be done with the fistula in her palate, we couldn't come up with anything else. Oh well, it was kind of nice having such a quick and easy one for once! And it seemed totally crazy just packing up and bringing her home right after it was done. We've always had to stay, and half of the time our stay has been in the PICU, so this was quite a change.
They warned us that Violet would likely be irritable and sleepy all day, but so far she has been neither. She's been so happy with her new little dolly she got at the hospital. It was so nice of them to give her this sweet baby doll, and she loves it!
Surgery #9 is under our belt. Hopefully there won't be too many more down the road for Super-Vi!
