With our win over Ellsworth in the quarter-finals, that set us up for a 1994 re-match against Beloit for Game 2. We were hoping to avoid Beloit until the championship game, but we had the same 20-3 record as Goodland going into state and they won the coin-flip to get the 3 seed, so we met up with #1 for the semi-final game.
The students' theme for this game was Hawaiian and we scored these awesome red and blue Hawaiian shirts at the Hutch Walmart. Throw in some lays and grass skirts that Ardyth sent with my parents and these girls looked awesome!
The team met in the lobby. . .
. . . and we had a quasi-send-off for them -- Go get 'em, boys!!
Before the game we got a picture of some of the 1994 team who were there. Not bad, 7 out of 12 plus the coach! (This is a Friday, remember, so they all had to take off work to be there. And there ended up being 9 + 2 coaches there on Saturday!)
Announcing starting line-ups. . .
. . . and these fans are ready to cheer their Eagles to victory!
Here are a few pics of the game, which ended up being the most fun of all three to watch as a nervous momma.
Why was this game so fun to watch, you ask? Because the only time Beloit led was when the score was 2-0 at the very beginning. We led 17-5 at the almost-end of the 1st quarter before they sunk a full-length shot. The way the game ended, I was thankful they had that moment to smile about.
And because we kept a double-digit lead throughout most of the game.
They were so much bigger than us, and when #45 or #44 got the ball, they pretty much scored every time. But our defense was stifling and we just prevented them from getting the ball. It was impressive.
One of Dana's co-workers was at the tournament watching Hayden & Silver Lake's girls and was kind enough to share these great pics with our fans (including Violet, me and Mom) in the background.
Going into the 4th we sat with a comfortable 12 point lead, which we eventually stretched to 18. I had to go find Oliver in the student section to hug him and say, "We're doing it!!"
The student section started going crazy, cheering, "Just Like '94!"
When the final horn sounded, all of Wellsville was celebrating!
I just love the excitement and joy on these boys' faces -- we just beat the #1 by almost 20 points!!
Of course, we had to head out to the Hall of Champions after the game and find the picture from 1994. Then we had to get our current Eagle with the champions in our family (who were there, missing Scott and Kyle) from that team.
A couple more family pictures with our big-time player to commemorate the big-time win!!
One more game, fellas, ONE MORE GAME!!
