We've reached the end of the quarter so the kids had Friday off school. Time for a JM&MB day! We'd been wanting to see the new DeBruce Center by Allen Fieldhouse, home of the original rules of basketball, so we took off to Lawrence. First on the agenda was lunch -- The boys picked Freddy's and it was yummy!
Then we went to campus, parked in the garage, and immediately saw the huge display of the rules that connects the Fieldhouse with the DeBruce Center.
Inside was a display on Phog Allen, and even his picture was made up of the rules!
While searching for the actual rules, we wandered over to the Booth Athletics Hall of Fame, where the boys always find plenty of fun things to do and look at.
They loved testing their reflexes and checking out the National Championship trophies.
We eventually asked where the rules were located and learned that they are WITHIN the wall! You have to push a button to illuminate them from behind some crazy high-tech glass.
It's so amazing to think that these 2 pieces of paper are 125 years old! We loved reading through the larger replica and laughing at some of Naismith's original rules.
We always have a great JM&MB Day when we get to visit these coaches!
Knowing how much my boys love unusual rocks, next we visited Summit's Steps, a shop full of beautiful and rare minerals, crystals, and gems. They loved looking at the geodes valued at over $5000 and the cool patterns on some of the minerals. Based on how much they were selling their small crystals for, Calvin estimated that the crystal he mined this summer in Arkansas should be worth well over $50. He was feeling pretty proud of that fact!
Our final stop of the afternoon was open gym at Lawrence Gymnastics Academy. We've been here before on a JM&MB day and the boys loved it so much, they've been begging to go back. Last time, we were the only ones in the place; this time there were kids everywhere! We still had a great time, though. Oliver loved swinging on the high and low rings. . .
. . . and the rope swing. My boys would go crazy high on this one!
Calvin did lots of flips from every high point in the gym.
It cracked me up when Oliver ran up to the vault and said, "Look at me, I'm Gabby Douglas!" Yep, buddy, you look exactly like Gabby!
Calvin showed off some mad skills as he jumped WAY up high on the big trampoline. We were all worn out from jumping by the time our afternoon was through.
These boys are crazy fun and I love having fun with them on our special days!!
