Oliver's First Grade Field Trip

This week the Wellsville Elementary first graders took off to explore all of the animals at the Kansas City Zoo.  Oliver studied the map closely to figure out the best route around the zoo.
Do these guys look ready for a safari or what?!?
There were LOTS of elephants to see. . .
. . . and flamingos. . .
. . . and kangaroos!
And isn't this tree kangaroo adorable?
Oliver's all-time favorite animal is the cheetah and he was SO excited to see one in real life.  Unfortunately, this was the best we could get for a view of the beautiful creature.
The boys in our group were so excited to run across the "shake shake bridge" as they kept referring to the suspension bridge at the zoo.  And shake it did -- they weren't disappointed!
What a bunch of crazy boys!
The birds were so pretty and colorful in their trees. . .
. . . and these boys had fun playing in a great big tree, too!

The jellyfish were mesmerizing. . .
(Oliver thought this one looked like it was smiling :) )
. . . and the penguins were so active!  We watched them indoors and out.

We finished our day by having a unique and heart-pumping encounter with the Lorikeets.
The Lorikeets are these brightly colored, deceivingly docile little birds.
We received our instructions from the zoo keeper and then it was time to head in to feed the seemingly-peaceful birds their nectar.
As soon as we walked in, it was like something out of an Alfred Hitchcock movie.  Okay, so maybe not that bad, but a little unnerving at any rate to have so many birds flying at you all at once!  Oliver thought it was pretty cool to have birds all over his body!  (I wasn't so sure. . .)
He told me that the ones on his arm were fighting over the last bit of nectar.
He was telling a pretty good story to his buddy as I was trying to get the last bird off of my arm.
Waiting for the bus at the end of the day, these kids were tired, but you'd never be able to tell!
What a fun field trip!
